6 years ago, I never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be able to do this. Looking back, it all seems like a dream (sometimes a nightmare) with muscles more sore than imgainable in the morning from not sleeping well!
I had open heart surgery to repair an Atrial Septal Defect. Very 'simple' heart problem that is caught in time can be repaired with no lasting problems. So I had surgery. That was the beginning of a long recovery. I worked at a wilderness therapy camp. In order to keep my health insurance I returned to my job and just 3 months after being in ICU I was living in a tent again. OUCH!
Needless to say I was putting myself in a postion that wouldn't let me recover the way I needed to. I tried for two years...then QUIT. I moved across country to AZ and quickly realized I wanted to not be there. I decided to quit my job, sold my car and bought a bicycle. February 27rd I started riding. That was a great trip in many ways. I rode 2618.5 miles 77 days and lost 60 pounds! If you want to read about it check out http://pheonix-2-asheville.blogspot.com/
Now I am wanting to do another ride and raise money for The Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA). I will be riding the continental divide from Banff Canada to Antelope Wells NM near ElPaso.. .hence the title of this post. That is the question I am asked most often! :)
