I am very blessed to be retired -- I know I'm only 56 (or will be a week from Friday) but post polio told me that it was time to leave full time work. My schedule is very flexible so there's not an issue with finding time to exercise - I'll admit that pain and fatigue could provide a wonderful excuse to not move if I let them but I know that I'm accountable here and have made a commitment to my health and fitness. I know that I inspire others by maintaining a health and fitness regimen no matter what...
Today I had to go to the post office and the bank. We had a torrential rain storm yesterday and there were black ice warnings but the sun was coming out and the temperatures began to climb. Compared to what I trained in last winter, it was a balmy day. I had been doing intense cardio workouts for this past month on my recumbent bike or getting in a run and today my body told me that it needed a break. It was my cardio day so I got very creative -- I left the car in the driveway, put my water belt on and decided to combine chores with exercise and walked. I ended up walking for 60 minutes. I didn't concern myself with average heart rate today -- I listened to my body's promptings to just get out and do a good walk. It felt wonderful - no iPod - just me and the sounds of nature and soaking up the Vitamin D from the sun.
So the next time you think you don't have time to exercise - get creative and leave the car in the driveway.
