Comment by Kyle on January 11, 2011 at 10:27pm I thought I would share some final thoughts with the group. Firstthought is this was a wonderful weekend. While running I listen to my music. One of the songs I listened to towards the end was from the Broadway showWicked, “One Short Day”. Listening to this song really got me going. First it’san up-tempo song, but the lyrics really hit me.
ONE SHORT DAY
IN THE EMERALD CITY
ONE SHORT DAY
TO HAVE ALIFETIME OF FUN
ONE SHORT DAY…
So here I am around mile 23 andeven though it seems like this will never end…it’s really just one short day.
And then it’s all over.
Bill Braceland of Sanford, FL was one of the last finishers, and the oldest. He is 82 on race day.Bill shows me that I have a lot of yearsleft.
Thank you Bill.
I found out there were about 70 men that did not finish. Itlooks like there were about 120 women that did not finish.
I have often wondered how many are not able to finish. Ithink this is a really small percentage and it speaks volumes about much peopletrain and prepare.
As for me I gave the marathon all I had and then some. Backin November I ran the San Antonio marathon and finished at 5:22. After running the half at 2:29 I rested allday. And carbed up all night. Sunday I ran without walking up to just aftermile 21. I had been tired for a few miles but kept pushing. But finally Idropped down and walked for a hundred feet or so. Then I started to jog again. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not fast even when running. At this stage I’m about13 to 14 minutes a mile. I think I dropped down to walking about 2 or 3 moretimes. But I just kept looking at my Garmin and wanting to run. I had told mysister I would finish at 5:30 and for some reason I just kept pushing.
During the last mile as we were running around the world, for a while I ran beside a Team in Training coach and a young lady named “Bright”.The TNT coach kept calling her name and saying how good “Bright” was doing.Bright wanted to slow down and walk. At this point I thought to myself, what’sthe point of coming 25 plus miles and not doing this all out. I was cramping abit also at this point. I had taken lots of Powerade, Gatorade, and Clif Shots. But I just can’t seem to absorb what my body can sweat out. But I kept on goingand finished at 5:29:33. I placedoverall 8894/13522. As usual I had negative splits. I really slow down aftermile 20. But I finished and had a great time doing so. I want to say a huge thanks to all the volunteersthat worked the race. The WDW cast members we also wonderful. The Team inTraining group must have had a hundred coaches by the route offering support toALL runners. I’m in for 2012, January 7th and 8th.
