A friend of mine just completed Chicago and is contemplating a marathon in Berlin or NYC next year. Please share your opinion on your recommendation. Which is better & why?
I've not done NYC before, but I did Berlin last September. Without having run NYC, I can only say that Berlin was awesome! Out of all events I've done, the event organisation, atmosphere, and crowd support at Berlin was second to none. And running through Brandenburg Gate just before the finishing line was such a thrill as well as emotional. It's a very fast course and I set a massive PB there. And you get to run against the world record holder, Haile Gebrselassie. Finally you don't have to enter a ballot to get into Berlin, it's first in first served. Apply when entries open, you'll get a place guaranteed.
Hey Joe...I just ran NYC last weekend. I really liked the course and the crowd was awesome. That being said, I don't think that I'd run the race again. Race day is crazy and super long, with way too much time spent getting to the start and trying to get out after the finish. Oh yeah, and there's the whole lottery thing which means there's no guarantee your friend can get into NYC next year (unless he's running for a charity).
